Using long-term transit timing to detect terrestrial planets
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose that the presence of additional planets in extrasolar planetary systems can be detected by long-term transit timing studies. If a transiting planet is on an eccentric orbit then the presence of another planet causes a secular advance of the transiting planet’s pericenter over and above the effect of general relativity. Although this secular effect is impractical to detect over a small number of orbits, it causes longterm differences in when future transits occur, much like the long-term decay observed in pulsars. Measuring this transit-timing delay would thus allow the detection of either one or more additional planets in the system or the first measurements of non-zero oblateness (J2) of the central stars.

Using Transit Timing Observations to Search for Trojans of Transiting Extrasolar Planets
Theoretical studies predict that Trojans are likely a frequent byproduct of planet formation and evolution. We examine the sensitivity of transit timing observations for detecting Trojan companions to transiting extrasolar planets. We demonstrate that this method offers the potential to detect terrestrial-mass Trojans using existing ground-based observatories. We compare the transit timing vari...
متن کاملThe Use of Transit Timing to Detect Extrasolar Planets with Masses as Small as Earth
Future surveys for transiting extrasolar planets, including the space-based mission Kepler (1), are expected to detect hundreds of Jovian mass planets and tens of terrestrial mass planets. For many of these newly discovered planets, the intervals between successive transits will be measured with an accuracy of 0.1–100 minutes. We show that these timing measurements will allow for the detection ...
متن کاملThe Stability and Prospects of the Detection of Terrestrial/habitable Planets in Multiplanet and Multiple Star Systems
Given the tendency of planets to form in multiples, and the observational evidence in support of the existence of potential planet-hosting stars in binaries or clusters, it is expected that extrasolar terrestrial planes are more likely to be found in multiple body systems. This paper discusses the prospects of the detection of terrestrial/habitable planets in multibody systems by presenting the...
متن کاملObservable Consequences of Planet Formation Models in Systems with Close-in Terrestrial Planets
To date, two planetary systems have been discovered with close-in, terrestrial-mass planets (. 5−10M⊕). Many more such discoveries are anticipated in the coming years with radial velocity and transit searches. Here we investigate the different mechanisms that could form “hot Earths” and their observable predictions. Models include: 1) in situ accretion; 2) formation at larger orbital distance f...
متن کاملExtrasolar Terrestrial Planets : Can We Detect Them Already ?
With the example of Proxima Centauri we discuss the feasibility of detecting terrestrial planets (1 to a few M⊕) using the high precision radial velocity (RV ) technique. If a very high RV precision for M stars is achieved even planets with these extremely low masses become detectable. For Proxima Cen (M5V), one of the prime targets of our Mstars planet search program using the UVES spectrograp...
